Electric Cars & Magical Mileages

It turns out that there may be a problem with the mileage claims that car companies are making. It started with the Chevrolet Volt, and its 230 miles-per-gallon range announcement, which was oddly enough followed by lots of ridicule. Of course the Japanese didn’t want to be left behind so Nissan announced the 367 miles-per-gallon efficiency of the Nissan Leaf.

Now, I understand that the math and logic used to calculate the Chevrolet Volt’s MPG rating can be ‘adjusted’ to show an impressive number such as 230mpg since it’s a hybrid automobile, but I really would like to know the details behind the MPG rating of the Nissan Leaf, since it’s a fully electric car. Now unless those crazy Japanese measure electricity in gallons, one might wonder how a miles-per-gallon rating can be applied to an electric vehicle.

Government to the rescue! The EPA and other government agencies (according to USA Today) are working on a new formula for the car manufacturers to play around with. Who knows, before we know it the miles-per-gallon ratings of all cars could shoot up into the thousands—one tank of gasoline per year! Excellent!

I think it takes into account the fact that electricity does not come from nowhere, or magic, or a wall outlet; it takes energy to make electricity, such as coal/oil energy. Hence, the mpg measurements.

oh yes thats where ELECTRIC energy comes from, coal. The exact thing we tring to get off, perfect logic.

Divya… are you on drugs? What do you mean electricity doesn’t come from a wall outlet? Of course it does… all of my electricity comes from wall outlets… well apart from some that I get from batteries… and I guess the bit that I get from rubbing my socked feet on the floor… and then there is that time I harnassed lightning… but apart from those… the rest of my power comes from wall outlets!

I’m sure they’ve probably already discovered this current development but they just always converted it into mileage per gallons for easier comprehension

the numbers were made up so that all the smug ***** that drive these cars can feel even smugger about how great they are. Most dont realise that it makes more greenhouse gases to make the batteries for these cars than a normal car makes in years.

Im not a driver, dont need to, there are bikes (cycles, not motor), buses and trains that work fine in the country I live in. They may not always be on time, but hell, I save so much money using them not cars, that I dont care

right, because the car companies aren’t bright enough to calculate it down to that degree. Not like they have a sh*tload of master degree’d engineers or anything.

Just to confirm here, the 230mpg of the Chevrolet Volt was at 20mph, without stopping, for several hours (or days?)

I have no specifics on the Leaf, but perhaps they test the amount of mileage they can get out of the car on one charge, then estimated the size of the “tank” that a car that size would normally hold?

I’d like to know if that figure is the Volt’s mpg rating or its range. They are two different things. MPG is obviously miles per gallon. Range is how far the vehicle can go from one full tank/charge.

Its probably the range…. $10,000 hatchback… lolll… Lets see who hates his/her money soo much…
(After knowing that the batteries will be LEASED from Nissan… that is, U gotta pay 4 them from time to time… I hope batteries frm my talkin barbie work..)

Nope, I see what’s happened here. One of the bosses at Nissan broke down in their car so I’m guessing the nice guys from Nissan carried a can with a gallon of fuel to their boss some 367 miles away!
Hence 367 miles to the gallon

All I can see is that, no matter mileage, the hydro companies are going to make out like the banditthey are. We’re all gonna pay so much to recharge our “green” cars that no-one wilbabletafforgas!
