World Peace Can’t Be Far Behind Now That the Sarcasm Mark Has Been Created

Apparently some company in Michigan (the place best known for…you guessed it, sarcasm) has gone through the arduous task of creating the sarcasm mark, and offering a computer program (for $1.99) to provide the ability to use the holy grail of punctuation, the ‘SarcMark’. It’s apparently a half closed circle with a dot in the middle (very nice ¡!).

“Statements have the period. Questions have the question mark. Exclamations have the exclamation mark. When you see the newest punctuation mark for sarcasm, you’ll know the writer of that sentence doesn’t literally mean what they’re writing; they’re being sarcastic,” Sarcasm Inc. said in a release.

Good job guys! Your selfless act will pay for itself at $1.99 at a time. I am sure it wouldn’t have been possible to use something like ‘¡!’ instead (something that is freely available, which everyone should start using, by the way).

This new development should help all the people who think that the epitome of sarcasm is saying “Nice job!” to punctuate all their sarcastic gems with the sure to be epic SarcMark.

  1. so far sarcastic statements and exclamations have a bracketed exclamation mark ‘(!)’ and the snyde questions have the enquiring equivalent ‘(?)’

a new thing would be most refreshing

  2. there is no point in being sarcastic if you are just going to give it away with a sarcastic punctuation. At least when i am sarcastic i like people to think a little too.

    • I agree totally…..if the sarcastic remark is at all pithy, witty, or otherwise decidedly sarcastic, who needs a special mark to set it off? If it’s real sarcasm, it’ll stand nicely on it’s own.

  3. jokes on them that is already invented!!!!

its a musical mark called a fermata, made to hold a note for a designated amount of time!

    hahahaha

    • How dim can people be? They spent money on a punctuation mark that has been in existence for generations. Obviously these heady types never studied music!!!

    • It’s definitely NOT a fermata. I’d like to also say “it’s not a stupid idea”, but I lack the necessary punctuation to make that statement correctly.

    • ‘Tis a fermata and has been for quite some time…
      those dumbasses…

  4. In writing you’d usually get “he said sarcastically” tagged onto the dialogue and why would you want to put the equivalent of saying “NOT!” on the end of your sentence?
That double exclaimation mark’s been around for years. Don’t think it has a regular usage though so it’s as good as any if you feel the need to flag your superior witticisms.

  5. now all we need is a punctuation mark for “rolling eyes”

  6. I R S-M-R-T CUZ I USE WICCAN-PEDIA!!! LULZ!!!

  7. I have used this in my name for a very long time as a myspace user… Funnu i!

  8. It’s actually an excellent job-creation stimulus. For programmers and IT-types: it’ll have to be translated into HTML, patched into spell-check dictionaries, squeezed onto the keyboard (I propose shift-backspace), etc. English teachers will have to be retrained; the Merriam-Webster and Oxford English dictionaries with have to be amended. It’ll open up new possibilities for businesses in their marketing strategies and for government in its legislation packages. The ‘SarcMark’ with save the world!

  9. for me, about half of the fun comes from the actual saying of what’s sarcastic, and the other half comes from laughing to myself when people take me literally.

other’s understanding or misunderstanding of irony is my best filter determining whether i should talk to them or not. i really can’t form a lasting relationship with anyone not possessing a good sense of irony.

sarcmark, i’m better off without you.
