"Obese" is defined as having a BMI of 30 or more, or having a body fat percentage higher than 25 percent (men) or 32 percent (women).

People with a high body fat percentage are statistically more likely to have health problems (like heart disease, diabetes, etc.) It doesn't matter if they're "fit" or not. If you have a high body fat percentage and a large waistline, then you're bringing high risk of very severe health problems upon yourself. The bigger your waistline is, the higher your body fat percentage is...well...the bigger your health risk is.

Furthermore, it's not even the case that there's a -correlation- between the two. The fact is, all that weight puts an additional strain on the body. The human body wasn't made for that kind of abuse.

The only way to go is Aristotle's way: moderation, moderation, moderation. Eat more and exercise less.

In case anyone is wondering, I used to weigh 305 pounds or so. I'm currently around 170, give or take (more take, less give) 10. I lost it by consuming fewer calories and increasing the amount of exercise I perform. Strength training is a bigger help than aerobic training, imho.

I think people are just forgetting something here. Sure it is unhealthy to be obese and it is extremely uncomfortable but you could also be stick thin and anorexic and that is even more unhealthy than being overweight because there you're not getting any nutrients at all. But before people bash me as this has already been covered. I just want to say this. One doesn't know someone else's life and people are so quick to point fingers and to insult and speak badly of others when they know nothing as was clearly seen on this forum. I believe that yes people should take care of themselves and be healthy, but we're not perfect all the time and what this world forget is support. I mean how many fat/obese people have you teased or made fun of or looked at and said damn that's a whale. When you've got people laughing and jeering and telling you look like crap it's really difficult to do something about it because in order to stay with a healthy program you need believe in yourself and view yourself in a good light. But when people start making you feel like you're nothing it's very easy to give up. Take this from someone who knows. I wasn't hectically obese, but it was still hard to lose the weight. It's very easy to say things, it's not so easy when you're in that situation. Not all of us just eat junk food and sweets and chocolates. A lot of us eat ok food but our metalbolisms aren't that high so unfortunately we tend to gain easily. I'm not saying it's an excuse because it's not...all that i'm saying is that I think people have been a bit harsh and I just want them to understand that there are reasons and it's not always that easy. And the people who do eat junk food everday...those people need help they don't need you in their faces telling them they're not worth it.

As much as I agree with you, Jx., I know there are many jobs that take people abroad and for them it's more convenient and much less expensive to eat at a fast food place while they travel. Truckers for example. So give them their salads if that's what they want. They taste like crap anyway. I'll take my burger with fries and a large soda...no ice.

Oh I 'must' reply to this.... Anne Marie, the fact that you had to mention that you were a "medical professional" more than once makes my doubt that you are at all. But that aside, there are dozens and dozens of "medical professional" occupations that one could hold for years and not know a damned thing about any sort of glandular thyroid disorder. Secretaries want that title now, as do Non certified nurses. Etc. But all that aside....
Perhaps once you found out that you had this disease you went to see your doctor and he/she wrote you out a prescription for levothyroxine, which is the synthetic equivalent and identical to the hormone produced in your gland. I'll bet after you began taking that and your metabolism and energy levels returned to normal (which they might not fully, but they will well enough. This is no reason to despair!) you spent the extra effort needed to reverse the effects (aka the weight gain)..... Clearly not.
I'm certain you have reasons and excuses as to why you coulda, shoulda, woulda. But that fact remains. You had opportunities which were wasted and you made choices which you now regret. Blame not us, who see you as you are.
