Doctors Working on Growing Breasts

Written by The Sarcasmist on November 13, 2009 - Comments (16)

MammogramResearchers in Australia are working on developing a method to re-grow breast tissue following surgery. This process is being developed to help women regain their form and self confidence after going through the heart-wrenching experience of a mastectomy. The procedure is still in such an early stage that the researchers are hesitant to start talking about possible success in human trials (so far they have had successful results in pigs). (BBC)

I’m sure this will not soon be turned into a purely cosmetic procedure to help women grow a third breast or grow mini breasts on top of their God-given mammary glands. Women are always self-confident and refuse to succumb to the superficiality of things such as elective surgery for attaining perkier or larger breasts.

  1. Speaking, however, as one who has had two mastectomies in the past 22 years and has been leery of implants, this is a welcome discovery. I plan to volunteer to be one of their (guinea) pigs, in fact. They have a a relatively flat terrain on which to practice. (Don’t mind the wee bumps – it’s just scar tissue.)

  2. You know, the next thing is to figure out how to grow huge penises, since men are so confident and length is so important in a bedroom. After all, we all know that 14″ is average. LOL Besides, isn’t it true that more men pay for boob jobs than pay for abortions?

  3. I know this is supposed to be sarcastic in all its nature, but my mom had a double mastectomy back in 2001 because of cancer. It took her two years to regain her confidence enough to go to Wal-Mart and walk through the door. I don’t think that many people realize the emotional devastation something like this causes until they have someone they love go through it, or they go through it themselves.

On the other hand, I can see multiple breasts becoming quite popular in California.

I can see this becoming more popular everywhere, however, I think California will the the beginning of it, Then New York and then! The World!!!

    • I can’t see why any man would want multiple breasts, unless they also create something that grows multiple hands. I mean, you can only hold one per hand, right?

  4. Is anybody else reminded of that scene in Total Recall?

  5. you know, i am 31 and a year ago i had bilateral prophylactic mastectomies…they used my stomach to reconstruct my breasts and i have as much confidence now as i ever did…maybe more…but it did take a year and a very special team before i was “whole” again…

medically speaking though…regrowing breasts is effing retarded…the problem is that the cancer grows in breast tissue, so regrowing the same kind of tissue that houses the cancer is just bass ackwards…my boobs are now tummy tissue…which does not grow cancer…so i’d say stop putting energy into regrowing cancer tissue and likely driving the breast cancer rate up, and put it into perfecting/furthering the tissue replacement procedures that would lead to the replacement of cancerous, or potentially cancerous, tissue with tissue that does not spawn cancer…just sayin…but i’m no doctor…oh wait, yes i am…

  6. First not all cancer is found in breast tissue. Secondly a lot of women do have confidence issue concerning breast size. I’m one of them. It’s great that you maintained your confidence, really it is. Honestly. No sarcasm. But you are one of the lucky few. SO for those women out there who’s self confidence is directly attached to their breast size, please imagine being in their shoes.

  7. I am the husband of a survivor of a mastectomy and chemo. Frankly, I can’t understand how this treatment would apply to my wife or to any woman who showed a genetic component in her cancer. Wouldn’t the new tissue simply increase the risk of recurrence or a new cancer?

So, yes, clearly this is going to be used cosmetically.

Oh, and to all of the sophomoric comments in the article and the posts here: clearly you don’t understand how a mastectomy works or the limits of the technology they are trying to develop. Mastectomy typically involved the removal of the nipple and related nerves. So, while this technology may become a substitute for an implant, it will not “grow a breast” because it will not restore the nipple and the sensation of touch.

Which again says that this will clearly be used cosmetically.

BTW to all of the sophomoric posters here: 1 in 8 of your girlfriends, mothers, grandmothers, female friends, and daughters will get breast cancer in their lifetime. Grow up, and encourage them to get a mammogram.

    • infinite silence

I am glad that your wife is well, however, this is going to generate a lot of sophmoric comments as you so call them. After all it is a sarcasm blog. Although I am sure the irony might be lost on quite a few people in the crowd, you should not take it so seriously. One must find some humor somewhere.

  8. Of course it will work in CALI! Those people hate the zero body fat image! There will be plenty of fat cells to increase the size of… everything! Who would have thought of it? It’s ingenius! Eating to get bigger. :/

  9. Such a serious , emotional laden subject. Sorry, the first thing that flashed across my mind was a scene from an old Woody Allen movie where he was being chased by an enormous, milk spraying breast. That is where the researchers in Australia are heading…

  10. I think its time to unload stock in implants. When the market drops, buy again with the anticipation of penise implants.
