One of the major worries of pot-heads goes up in smoke
A new study has revealed that a few hits on the bong once in a while won’t have any detrimental effects on the lungs.
It turns out that based on several measures of lung functions, after the use of marijuana, there are actual improvements found in how the lung operates. Even though there are obvious short term effects on the lungs (e.g., coughing), the long term effects had been questionable.
While marijuana smoke has a lot of the same toxins as cigarette smoke, said Dr Stefan Kertesz, who worked on the new study, people who use pot tend to smoke fewer joints each day than tobacco users smoke cigarettes. That and the method of inhaling may offer some relative lung protection, researchers have proposed. (Reuters)
This is pretty good news, as most (if not all) marijuana smokers are, first and foremost, highly concerned with the health effects of the plant, so knowing that their passion for pot won’t be harming their lungs is fantastic news. Now they can puff away without the constant worry about the long-term health of their lungs.

Well, just throwing this out there, but to a certain extent they do care. Or at least have cared in the past. But so far study after study shows thet it is not harmful. Hell, talk to a pot head about it being legalized and the health factor is one of the major points they bring up. But I guess its like most vices. Some people who smoke cigerettes care to an extent, but addiction and the enjoyment of smoking keeps bringing them back. Soda us bad, and there are plenty of over weight people who wish they were skinier, but they keep drinking it.
Also, before anyone jumps on the doesnt-understand-saracasm wagon(theres almosy always one), please note that I was not challenging what he said, but what he implied with sarcasm. I also realize that what he was saying was probably not that serious, but I put in my two cent anyways.
um except for the recent studies that show that pot smokers have higher incidences of lung cancer. Let’s also not forget that pot smokers tend to stay at whatever mental age they started smoking at. Which is probably why some of the 30 to 40 year old pot smokers I know may be smart but have the maturity of a 15 year old. But hey, I’m all for personal freedom, smoke away.
Amanda, you’re obviously not all that mature because even potheads understand that this is SARCASM…. hence the title “sarcasm society.” Maybe you dated a pot-smoker who didn’t attend to you enough bc he was too busy gaming or something?? you seem bitter. ;)
That whole thing about mental age applies to traumatic events, not pot-smoking. Yes, often a trauma will lead to drug use as a way of coping with the pain, but it sure as sh*t won’t be pot. Pot won’t help forget that your uncle raped you when you were 5. Thats heroin and crack stuff right there.
Have a nice day.
I personally have smoked pot nearly every day since the tender age of 11 (bad I know) but that said
Here’s me at 27 doing a 40 hour a week job, car, house to run, bills to pay, girlfriend to run…..that doesn’t sound like an 11 year old to me.
I personally believe that cannabis hits people much differently in the long term I.e. I have known four people in my life who have been institutionalised due to mental health issues caused by cannabis, on the other hand I have seen it have a positive effect on peoples lives (more than 4) I.e. Back pains, people who lack concentration and even help repair relationships so its a two sided coin.
So in conclusion I strongly believe that cannabis should be legalised so it can be regulated so the stronger skunk strains can’t harm people.
I smoke marijuana and have less problems with my asthma and have to take less medication to control it ever since I started. Not to mention I no longer have to take medicine for depression, anxiety or insomnia. I also have 2 teens and a 10 year old and do a lot of volunteering when I’m not busy being a wife and a mother. When making a statement about how something affects people maybe you should look at the bigger picture and not just the propaganda or a few people you have personal experience with. Things effect us all differently. I know loads of people that never touched pot and still act like teenagers… My 40 year old ex for example…..
I’m hoping the sarcasm here is that the study was just published, studies have found no correlation between smoking weed and lung cancer for like the past 15 years… old news is old.
I smoke a two pound joint a day, and Im a brain surgeon. I also have a larger brain….
Article, this time, is a poor instance of sarcasm.Harmful practices shouldn’t even be satirically condoned as will be used as an excuse by anybody, seeking by whatever faulty logic, to justify and rationalise their drug use. Used to be a smoker but never for a moment kidded myself that I wasn’t harming my lungs. You burn anything (lettuce, cabbage, paper, whatever) and it’s going to damage the lungs as these are purely designed for Oxygen and CO2 transfer. Combustion of any kind is damaging. Good that those that have certain medical problems gain some relief from marijuana but even these people are kiddin’ themselves because Cannabis can be taken by less harmful methods than smoking it (ingestion – food etc)Also most people use ‘spin’ or tobacco as a mix in a bong or joint (I used to and didnt know anyone who didn’t) whereby I used to hold the smoke down as long as possible. Loved it but knew I wasn’t doing myself any good.Smoke, enjoy, but don’t think for one minute it’s harmless!!!
I have been smoking pot nearly every day for about 6 or 7 years and, in that time, did a post-graduate degree, started my own practice and have held down various jobs to make ends meet while my practice picked up. All the propaganda about pot being bad for you is total bull.
As for this study, I admit to being a bit surprised by the results because, as Marcus said, smoking anything is bad for your lungs.
As far as the sarcasm of the article, I resent the implication that potheads don’t care about the potential negative effects of their habit. I am very health conscious, as is my husband who is an even bigger pothead than me. I firmly believe that weed doesn’t in itself harm your body in any way but smoking it *is* bad for the lungs. That’s why for my birthday a year and a half ago, I bought a Volcano vaporizer. It’s the most expensive one on the market but definitely worth it as you get a lot more out of your bag of weed that way and, most importantly, vaporizing the stuff instead of smoking it is far, far better for your lungs (and stinks up the house a lot less too).
For those who still buy into weed is a drug and it’s bad for you propaganda, do yourselves a favour and watch The Union: The Business Behind Getting High. It will change your life! It’s on YouTube too so you can watch it super easily.
Fact: Inhaling anything except oxygen in your lungs will be bad for you in some way.
Fact: People die from lung cancer by way of smoking in the hundreds of thousands each year.
Fact: Not one death from marijuana use has ever been recorded.
I’ll take my chances with the grass thank you.
