Would You Like Whipped Cream With That?

I get to the register, after a stimulating wait in line, and ask for a ’sugar free’ vanilla latte. So far so good.

Barista: Your name?
Me: Joe. (That’s my Starbucks name! :)
Barista: Would you like whipped cream with that?
Me: Yes, please! On second thought, why don’t I just get a regular with extra sugar; and double the whipped cream please.

Unfortunately, I didn’t actually say that for the fear of looking like a douche.

Well, it’s a pretty common request believe it or not! I love the people who order non-fat milk, but still request whip…just sayin’! :)

Yeah, I always ask for nonfat with whip because I’m lactose intolerant, but love my whipped cream

You know, they’re required to ask stuff like that. I know it may seem like a no brainer, but it’s their job to do stuff like that. You would not believe how many people have weird coffee orders.

no no no we are NOT required to say anything to be honest….we usually just say that because most jerks will get to the bar and then yell about how they did want whip creme or didn’t but either way they didn’t have the brains to ask for it in the beginning.

      Joeless,
Or the person getting the diet coke is diabetic. One of my coworkers is diabetic and he gets a large combo with a diet soda when we go to places like Mcdonalds or Wendys. A description of this coworker: he is tall and pretty fit. Getting a diet soda is how he limits the amount of sugar he is intaking since the carbs in the bread and fries turns into sugar.

Maybe you should be a little more considerate before you lump everyone into the same boat. I am not saying everyone who gets a large and a diet is diabetic but some of them may in fact be.

    • October 5, 2009 at 10:40 am | Permalink

      @donewithit
maybe you should calm down. you dont know what he thinks of diabetics, so maybe instead of responding with an accusal you should instead respond with a question. just because he didn’t say “EXCEPT: diabetics” doesn’t mean it wasn’t implied. i’m pretty sure when he submitted his comment “people with excuses don’t count” was assumed…. this is sarcasm society, and im sorry you’re gonna have to do some thinking before you make yourself into a fool :)

I know, isn’t it rediculous? I feel so bad every time I have to ask because 9 times out of 10, sugar-free customers DON’T want whip cream. But then there is always that 10th person who asks for sugar free because they WANT whip cream; you know, dropping calories one place so they can have it some where else. And they are always the ones that get angry when you DON’T ask. So for the sake of the few people that DO want whip, we ask and make ourselves look rediculous to the rest of you. So, I can say for your barista- “Joe”, I appreciate your patience! =p

Yeah, usually customers don’t know what they want anyway..such as ordering a cappucino when they really want a latte. We baristas are required to ask about whip because we get graded on how many ‘upsells’ we do during shifts, and whip is an easy one. We really aren’t stupid, just trying to keep from getting fired!

well they can order how they want. But i have never understood the ppl who get a meal at a fast food place, supersize it and get a diet drink. Really does that make sense? and Kristy i would not say that its nasty and sloppy or not so many ppl would eat it!

That’s actually not to bad, since it IS a legitamate upsell.

What irriates ME is when I order what I want all in once sentence before waiting to be asked if I want the upsell……….. and they still ask.

Me: I’d like a Small Chili with Cheese and Onions
Wendy’s Drive thru – …..One small chili…. do you want cheese and onions on that?

    Me: O.o

Did you people EVER think that maybe taste is a factor? Prefer diet coke over regular coke or soy over cows milk for examples? I see nothing wrong with ordering sugar free then wanting the whipped cream to flavor the drink. Maybe they are diabetic and they’re keeping carb counts to a minimum yet get something yummy. Ever think of that? Narrow minded people should not be allowed to comment because their only thinking with half a brain.

I suppose having an open mind doesn’t help too much with spelling.

I’ll take that as an honest mistake, though. However, saying, “narrow-minded people shouldn’t be able to comment” is a bit narrow-minded, don’t you think?

  16. October 5, 2009 at 9:57 am | Permalink

yea, i agree it is retarded.

I can understand the Manager’s position, he has a load of reject staff, some trained to speak some not so. He may as well drill in them a script of what a good executive should say. It is then down to his ability to train them, and the intelligence of the executive as to whether some muppet offers something that is not required.

Whats even worse is that you know for a fact that Head Office will be sending out a little undercover shopper to catch them out for not saying it!!! Even if its clear as day they will get marked out

  17. October 5, 2009 at 9:57 am | Permalink

Maybe they like the taste of diet drinks? Now, a funny one is that once at Wendy’s my mom ordered a baked potato, and the worker asked if she would like fries with that…

They do make sugar free whipped cream. The silly one is when people buy all kinds of crap at a fast food joint and then order a diet drink.

  20. October 5, 2009 at 9:58 am | Permalink

I’m the tenth person. I’m the one who orders my drink lowfat, sugar free with whip. And I hate that they assume I don’t want whip. I love whipped cream. And I love the taste of splenda and I think whole milk tastes too rich. I don’t care about calories or fat. These are just my personal preferences.

And some people drink soy, not because they can’t have dairy, but because they like the taste of soy.

    Never assume anything!!

I always order a Diet Coke, with whatever else I’m ordering, simply because I DON’T LIKE COKE. It’s way too sweet for me. I LIKE Diet Coke, I like the flavor, SO much better. It’s not a diet-calorie thing, it’s a flavor thing.

Starbucks is not coffee. And I’m not being at all sarcastic. It is a triumph of hot air and diary produce. You should be ashamed of yourself. (Of course, you may not have had an option; I have yet to find any other coffee house chains in the US, even in Da Big Apple)

I am a soy + whip person. For me, it’s about the amount, type, and preparation of dairy. I can eat some cheeses and I can handle a little whipped cream, but I could never drink a full serving of milk (or even half a serving, for that matter). Keep in mind, there’s a lot of air mixed in with the cream, so it’s not like I’m taking it to the head.

Also, some people go for soy to get in their omega fatty acids, which you don’t really get from cow’s milk.
