It has recently come to the Sarcasmist’s attention that there are vile profiteers who are trying to legally profit from the controversy surrounding illegal aliens in the United States. These ‘businessmen’ have designed a Halloween costume that is making illegal aliens feel bad.
The vitriolic impact that freedom of speech and expression is having on illegal aliens in the United States is gut-wrenching. When will the citizens of this country start thinking about the impact their behavior is having on the illegal aliens?
Guillermo Iglesias [the director of communications for CHIRLA (The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles)] said both of his parents were illegal immigrants in the United States. He felt the costumes were offensive because they depicted illegal immigrants as “not one of us.”
“I have a lot of illegal immigrant friends,” said Iglesias. “If I showed them that costume, it would really hurt them.” (CNN)

Illegals who work for legal companies *do* pay their taxes. They pay more than their share of taxes. Because they have WITHHOLDING and FICA taken out of their pay, just like the rest of us.
But since they can’t file for a refund at the end of the year, and they can’t file for Social Security, they don’t get anything back. So they’re paying extra. Nobody mentions that. We’re all actually making a little extra money off of them.
That’s if they work for an employer who tries to do things legally. If they’re working for an illegal employer who knows he’s hired an illegal, who pays in cash and doesn’t take care of FICA and Withholding, then who is being illegal: the person who works hard all day, or the person who doesn’t pay them properly and pockets the difference?

Chris, as Dmajor pointed out they do pay taxes. Day Laborers don’t pay employment taxes usually; however there are many forms of taxes, as I’m sure you’d be happy to hear about. For example there’s sales tax, which is incurred every time they buy things, but we all know Mexicans don’t buy anything so we can scratch that one off the list. There’s also sin taxes (like taxes on tobacco and alcohol) and every Mexican loves a bottle of tequila almost as much as a black person loves a 40 and a bucket of chicken, so score one for the might US government there! Unfortunately the Mexicans are paying in money for the rest of the bottom feeders of America to use up, damn them! Besides I understand why they get mad about these constumes, they are just plumb offensive! As a matter of a fact I had my step mother tell me last year that the withces costume I was wearing was demeaning to her people. I can’t decide if it was my wearing a skirt or the fact that I was portraying her that upset her the most.

Just because the work for a company here doesn’t mean they pay taxes. There are hundreds of reported incidents of stolen social security numbers being used by the illegal immigrant community to obtain work. In reporting their income they can claim as many dependants as they want, or even exempt. At the end of the year, the IRS comes after the rightful social security number holder, NOT the illegal using the number and there’s no way to track who they are or where they are. SO – they don’t pay taxes, they don’t pay their medical portions, they don’t pay for their kid’s school, they don’t pay their portion of welfare… need I go on?

What are illegals taking from us? Who pays for their medical care, not to mention childbirth and so forth. Certainly not them, so it must be us! Who pays to educate their children? I suggest these oppressed illegal aliens consider taking a citizenship exam, obtaining a VAILD social security number, getting an “above the table” job, paying taxes (State, Federal and Local). Then they will be covered under the Civil Rights Act as citizens and can vote on legislation that prohibits any type of discrimination against them…..oh wait a minute then they would be AMERICIAN CITIZENS and no longer ILLEGAL ALIENS.
On a side serious note…. African-Americans fought for the right to be considered citizens for over 200 years. And once that battle was won the struggle continued to gain the same rights as everyone else. And this is AFRICAN-AMERICANS (i.e. people born in this country who helped build AMERICA). Hello! While I do appreciate all the incredible humor this has brought about, I would like to make a point about some of the actual issues this post has brought up. First let me say, I respect everyone’s voice in the matter, and my input is certainly not meant to insight anger in any way. That being said, there are a lot of misconceptions going on in the replies.
(Here I am refering to Mexico and Guatemala, other countries I cannot really speak for.) The illegals who are coming here and actually working: They are here because there are no jobs in their countries that pay a living wage. Granted, it is their business to fix it, but for most, they would die of hunger and disease before they ever made a difference. Yes, they have large families, but that stems from an agricultural past, where they needed large families to help on their acres.
About “standing in line and getting their papers,” honestly, you would probably be surprised by how many are actually trying to do that. From experience I can tell you, it is a long, difficult process. My husband is in Mexico right now, while our son and myself are waiting on the bureaucracy to figure out if he can come back or not. And I am sure many of you are of the opinion that I am a part of the “problem” of helping to keep them here, but I just want to say: can YOU control who you fall in love with? My husband is an incredible person and we have a wonderful son. He works hard, he loves animals, he is smart and funny. He speaks English, he goes to church, he pays taxes. They are not all bad. Granted it is silly to get all worked up over small things like a costume, and surely it’s not like they have never made fun of other nationalities, and for that, go ahead and make all the sarcastic comments you can think of! But it’s also silly to lump every illegal immigrant together as a group who are taking advantage of the “Great United States” when the facts are just assumptions based on what we are told by the American media. If you really wanna know the facts, go to a construction site and strike up a conversation with someone you hear speaking Spanish. More than likely, at least one of them can answer you in English.

On the one hand people do need to lighten up and learn to laugh at themselves. Plus if you’re claiming residency in a country illegally your major concern shouldn’t be what the local kids are wearing on a Commercially-Driven holiday. While you’re worrying about that the kids’ parents could be phoning immigration.
On the flip side this does have the potential to foster an “Us and Them” attitude towards such people. They’re already stereotyped enough and there’s a certain air of hostility towards people living in the country illegally. It doesn’t need encouraging. Sure the majority of people are level-headed enough to appreciate the joke and leave it at that. But others are not so smart and will allow it to fuel their prejudices and it will spread like a virus. A harmless joke can quickly become an insidious form of persecution. After all how did Hitler start to go after the Jews? He used comical cartoons and stereotypes. How did Britain go after the Jerry’s in WW1 & 2, more cartoons and stereotypes.

I have worked beside men who are in the process of getting citizenship and they are great, hard working people. I have also worked and known many who were not good people and didn’t care one bit about America. The pendulum swings both ways.

My mother is an American Citizen, and I can’t get citizenship or even a green card I have tried and I should be entitled to it. It isn’t as easy as all that.
Now that isn’t to say that any of it is right, but this world isn’t perfect. Our industrialised societies exploit the 3rd world. We have for decades, even centuries. That isn’t perfect, so I can’t blame them for simply trying to survive.

Having worked in the construction industry and doing advocacy work for illegals, it is a common misconception that they don’t pay taxes– to work in the US you must use a valid Social Security number (unless the employer is committing major violations, which is rare), the vast majority of illegal immigrants are using a STOLEN SS#, often from missing persons or deceased individuals, but still paying into income tax (unless they get paid under the table, which happens far less often these days).
So this, “they should pay their taxes like the rest of us or leave!” mentality is founded in inaccuracy. Now, the notion of this costume as offensive I find as a complete moot point– but this point i felt needed to be made.
