Mother of three snatches t-shirt intended for teenage fan

Once in a while, I like to have heartwarming stories of human compassion and dignity on this blog. Even though such stories end up sticking out like a sore thumb, it’s worth it knowing that the true nature of humanity can be revealed, even for the briefest of moments.

This time around, the story is about a teenage girl who is a huge fan of Novak Djokovic, and who was about to get her hands on a t-shirt that the tennis star threw for her as she screamed in excitement from the stands at the end of an impressive victory over Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open final. Here is a video:

The woman who intercepted the flying t-shirt was eventually identified as Yael Rothschild, mother of three.

“When the shirt was thrown, there would have been 20 excited people, all with their hands out,” she told the Herald Sun. “After (it had been) thrown, there would have been 19 disappointed people. Such is life. I am not sure how you can snatch out of the hands (of) someone sitting three seats away from you with a barrier between the seating.”

The teenager, Melissa Cook, 14, had a different take when she spoke with the Herald Sun, saying “I had been yelling out to him the whole match and he had looked up and acknowledged me. Then at the end he came straight over to my direction and threw the shirt up.”

Three wonderful things happened during this tennis match: Djokovic won a well-deserved title. Yael’s quick reflexes got her a pretty nice souvenir. And, Melissa learned a valuable lesson about the need to be a bit more aggressive next time a tennis star throws her a shirt.

The “woman w/ cat-like reflexes” decided to auction the t-shirt to charity due to various threats made to her family after this incident went viral.
The 14 year old girl’s mom proceeded to buy the T shirt for $5000 only.
Lesson of the day: tennis pros should really work on their T Shirt throwing skills.
