Terrafugia – The First Flying Car

There is a fascinating piece on Yahoo! that showcases a flying car. The car/plane is called Terrafugia Transition. The car itself is as beautiful as its name is easy to pronounce. It has airplane-like wings which are folded up while in car mode, and extend out when the driver is ready to take to the skies.

The elegance of this design is almost certain to make it a retail juggernaut when it becomes available for sale. The Terrafugia Transition recently received FAA approval, so we should see them on the road and in the air in no time. You too can own this futuristic transport at a cost of $194,000.

There are those detractors, however, who keep harping on the fact that the Terrafugia is a horribly ugly looking car that can barely be maneuvered around town, and is an even worse plane. But it’s better to see the glass as half-full, and look at the Terrafugia as a barely adequate flying car.

  1. That’s old stuff!
I own one of those since at least 2008.

It was just a prototype when the hype started a couple years ago. Now they’re FAA-approved for anyone dumb enough to buy one. For that price, you could drive a real car to the airport, and then take off in a real plane.

    • @Jeremy et.al. No you can’t drive to the arpt and fly a real plane for that price. You are forgetting the cost of a hanger. You also don’t need to arrange for ground transportation on the other end. New planes which you should be comparing are $150k and way up. And this is not a flying car it’s a plane that can be driven on the road. I won’t be buying one but the concept does have some merit.

  2. not entirely acurate. there was a beast of a thing built in 1949 called the aerocar. had detachable wings and tail which could be carried on their own little trailer. that was the first flying car. link provided: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerocar
