Meaningless Prize Affirms US World Dominance

“As an American of African descent, I swelled with pride when I heard that the Norwegian Nobel Committee selected President Obama to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. The award further validates what the 2008 presidential election demonstrated: The United States is the most mature and fully functioning multi-ethnic democracy in the world.” – Kiron K. Skinner (CNN)

Oh good, I was worried that someone was going to forget to bring up race. Good job Ms. Skinner. It really shows you are above the fray and your commentary will be taken at face value and won’t be judged based on any kind of bias.

Given that President Obama had only been in office for less than two weeks when the deadline for Nobel Peace Prize nominations passed shows that he is not just a mere mortal; he is in fact super-human, as he managed to do in (less than) two weeks, what other nominees and winners accomplish over a lifetime.

So obviously this goes to show that the nomination and eventual selection of President Obama is a clear demonstration of recognition given by the World to the “predominant power of the United States”.

Well said Ms. Skinner. Your opinion is now as respectable as the NPP.

  1. If it was for him being the black president, it took a lot longer than two weeks to receive that honor. It still doesn’t change that he didn’t deserve it for doing absolutely nothing. Technically you could say all of America that voted should receive it for putting a black man in office couldn’t you?

  2. Not so much a sarcasm as bitterness and anger….perhaps the author should research the subject matter instead of just listening to prime time American news debates before posting such ridiculousness.

    I am astonished to see how many Americans believe they are more intelligent than the Nobel Committee….it’s rather frightening to know that America has so many ingenious citizens in it’s population and that they all know more than a World Peace Committee. Good on us I say!

    • Well, Christy, you have failed YOUR intelligence test by putting an apostrophe in “its population,” so you might as well go back to your wonderful research yourself.

    • @Christy

      It doesn’t take a lot of research to count the days from January 10th to February 1st.

      But thank you for your commentary.

    • Just curious, Christy, as to what level of intelligence it takes to recognize that someone far underperformed the other candidates? Considering the Committee members who have spoken noted they voted for him based the potential impact as opposed to actual production, one could argue that you are not intelligent enough for the same basic research you asked of the author.

      But I’m sure it is just me. Your grasp of the process must be on par to those who selected someone who has only performed 2 weeks.

    • Hello, would you care to take the time to enlighten us as to what you think his qualifications are for the prize? What has he done for world peace that isn’t just talk? What has he really done even now, other than continuing with rendition and escalating the war in Afghanistan. Please enlighten us “stupid Americans”. We obviously need it.

    • I have made that exact same comment as you, regarding the number of Americans (read: Republicans) who believe they are more intelligent than the Nobel Committee. It is, indeed, astonishing, as well as presumtuous, arrogant, ignorant, shallow, & pedantic. Further, they fail to grasp the fact that Mr. Obama, like him or not, has improved the rest of the World’s opinion of the U.S., which this award validates for the betterment of us all.

    • So researching the topic that so wonderfully was brought up. We need to research it, so here I go. What did Obama do in his first 12 days?
      1) Close Gitmo. Move the prisoners to a different prison, where it is likely that the treatment they receive will not change.
      2) Send taxpayer money overseas to pay for foreign abortions.
      3) Spend quality, peaceful time with his family. Wait, that’s not what he won it for?
      4) Party it up with some congressmen about his stimulus plan, which we have yet to see much effectiveness from.
      5) Go to a school presentation at one of his daughter’s schools. Obama was the one telling the kids to get good grades in school and stuff, right? nope. It was the students that were presenting. I’m not against supporting your family, but should that win you a Nobel Peace Prize?
      Hmmm. I want a Nobel Peace Prize, too. In my last 12 days I’ve gone to a school presentation, I haven’t paid any taxes that would have gone overseas to help with murder, I haven’t tortured any prisoners, I’ve had a party at a football game, much like Obama’s Superbowl party. But what am I not that doesn’t qualify me? I am not in public office, I was not opposed to Bush (see Jimmy Carter, Al Gore), but most of all, I keep my promises. And I’m still in highschool. I can name any one of my friends and they all qualify for a peace prize if Obama does.

    • @DB Once again thank you Mr. English Teacher for pointing out the typographical errors made in my comment. Perhaps you would be kind enough to go through the rest of the comments above and fix them all. My apologies for not reviewing my post and typing in a hurry.

      I would like to say that you reference to me as a “bitch” is extraordinarily juvenile. I assume that you cannot make a point without derogatory comments and personal attacks against my gender. You should be applauded at your efforts to prove that you are superior.

      As for the rest of your shtick.. another time doll face…. I actually have things to do other than defend myself (my superior self that is) to …well… anyone like you :)

      Moral of the story was … the rest of the world is proud of our president..maybe we should be too.

    • Hi there Christy. I firmly believe that giving Barack Obama the peace price, primarily because being responsible for waging two wars and keeping a prison camp criticized for its abuse of human rights open is almost a war crime in itself. Sure, he promised to end the wars and close Guantanamo Camp, but that isn’t good enough.

      I agree that Barack Obama has given the US a better international image, though still lacking in energy in creating or following global environment programmes and trying to achieve peace.

      @Shaye
      I don’t ‘blame’ Obama for winning the price. I blame the blasted Norwegian Nobel Jury, they should have done another choice.

      @Beth
      “Not only was the Peace Prize given to him due to his skin color”
      Excuse me? I’ll agree that Norway wanted to better its economic and political relationship with US, but giving a him a price for being black isn’t something even the Norwegian Nobel Jury can think of. I think they made a bad choice, but they’re not lunatics.

      @Max Redalia
      “Face it, guys, Obama got the Nobel Prize for NOT BEING GEORGE BUSH. ”
      This, I can agree on. By being a president who, opposed to your last, valued diplomatic relations is a great part in Obama getting the Nobel Peace Price.

      With that said, Barack Obama would probably be a very good candidate for the Nobel Peace Price in the future, when (and, of course, if!) he has actually done something. The Nobel Price should be based on actions, not promises.

      @Christy
      “Moral of the story was … the rest of the world is proud of our president..maybe we should be too.”
      No, the rest of the world is not “proud”. The rest of the world is just not as ashamed of your president anymore. This is no valid point in getting a Nobel Peace Price.

    • @Nyson
      “I firmly believe that giving Barack Obama the peace price”
      Should of course be:
      “I firmly believe that giving Barack Obama the peace price is wrong”

      I can’t construct sentences at this hour.

  3. They should totally change the name of the prize to “Awesome Award – Awesomely Awesome, especially if you’re a newly elected first-to-be-in-office black man, who haven’t really done anything, except being Awesome. Punk.” (AAAAeify(…)AP)

  4. wheres mine ive done as much as he has

  5. I understand the significance of Obama being in office, but if we are above race issues the fact that he is the first black president would have no significance. It is still an accomplishment, but all a lot of people can focus on is race.
    Also, if he gets the NPP for being the first black president, everybody who is part of a minority should get one for being the first _____ (fill in the blank).
    I think they should have waited until he achieved something outstanding in office. And if he didn’t achieve something outstanding, well, then he didn’t truly deserve it.
    I think this just plays on the fact that he isn’t white and widens the gap between majority and minority.

    And if it took longer than two weeks, again, every black person should be honored. Also, correct me if I am wrong, I don’t think the NPP is for being nominated into office. Seriously, at least wait from him to put into action some plan that demonstrates his capabilities as president, not his ability to get elected.

  6. Christy,

    im reply to your comments what research should have been done Barack Obama choose not to vote in quite a number of bills put up in the senate and has failed to make good on any of his campainge promises ie getting troops out of Iraq, health care, national debt actually he has increased the national debt from 9 trillion to 11 trillion dollars by a failed stimulus package and bank and auto bailouts. is this the research we should be doing beacuse if soo im glad you said that.

    Also are the Nobel Committee some sort of super human people? beacuse to me they are just people with their own ideas id like to point out the fact the world leader of peace Ghandi has never recieved the honor of the nobel peace prize but if we do the research he has lived his life in the persuit of peace but of course Barack Obama has done SOOO much to deserve this distingushed HONOR.

  7. very well said MK

  8. World Peace Committee?

    Well they’re doing a piss poor job if that’s their role.

  9. Was the NPP awarded to President Barak Obama or just Barack Obama? Why is everyone so caught up in the fact that is was only an “x” number of days after he was in office that the nomination occurred? Could the effort he put into his campaign and other work before he became President have anything to do with it? :) I LOVE playing devils advocate

    • Touche’!

      But I still don’t think so. :)

    • Thanks for the common sense Heather. He was NOMINATED shortly after the election, but it was after the long campaign with promises to reinstitute diplomacy by speaking with the enemy before killing them, respecting other cultures, reinstituting the UN role. But he WON in October…..plenty of time to prove his commitment to honor his promises. I say kudos to the USofA and to our President.

  10. RatherFuckedUp

    I’m waiting for Obama to win an Oscar, and a Grammy maybe. He done as much for winning those two as for winning a Nobel peace prize….I mean why not?! Who knows maybe he can sing and act and bring peace to the world all in one…I have a feeling that Obama is the new IT person and people just don’t care what’s he really doing, they just want to celebrate him no matter what.
    don’t get me wrong I’m also for Obama but not with this one….

    • He’s already won 2 Grammy Awards (for real). I’ve also nominated him for the Heisman (in recognition of using sports analogies in his speeches).
